Croatian language studies are offered as of this academic year at the Burgenland College of Education. In collaboration with the University of Graz an academic department for Croatian has been set up in the frame of the new teacher education programme, with Slavic studies expert Zorka Kinda-Berlaković assuming the duties of professor.

The programme began in the autumn of 2017 for the 2017/18 semesters for all teachers in the Gradišće region that will teach school children from the ages of 10 to 18, from elementary school to secondary school graduation.

The syllabus is divided into two sections, with six semesters of baccalaureate studies followed by four semesters for the master’s degree. The teachers will also give instruction in school parallel to the theoretical lectures.

The Burgenland College of Education is the first and only institution in Austria to offer studies as Gradišćanskohrvatski/Hrvatski (Burgenland Croatian/Croatian). The linguistic prerequisites for attending studies are: students must be at the B1 level and secondary school graduate level. There is an option for students without knowledge of the language or with limited knowledge to enrol, with the Burgenland College of Education offering additional language courses.

During the summer semester Zorka Kinda-Berlaković will offer a lecture course at the College of Education on the subject of multilingualism, while the College of Education in Željezno (Eisenstadt) will stage an information day on the 1st of March for all interested persons.
