The festival on Unije island included a presentation of commendations by the event organisers, the City of Mali Lošinj and the local tourism board, the Slow Food Association of Unije, the local community committee and the Rijeka branch office of the Croatian Heritage Foundation.
A festival was staged to celebrate Emigrants’ Day on Unije, the westernmost inhabited island of our archipelago.
The event programme featured sports and recreation and culture and entertainment activities, kicking off on Friday the 21st of July with a junior futsal match and the UnijeAlka ring-tilting tournaments, differing from the more famous Alka ofSinj in that the players attempt to tilt the ring sitting in wheelbarrows pushed by their seconds.
A cross-country race was staged along the island trails, also for the kids.
An exhibition was opened of artwork by children created at a workshop led by Iva Mavrović, as was an exhibition of souvenirs created by KoraljkaHaberleandLucijaPejić.
The festival opened with a performance by the JosipKašmanWind Ensemble of Mali Lošinj and a presentation of commendations for the competition participants by the event organisers, the City of Mali Lošinj and the local tourism board, the Slow Food Association of Unije, the local community committee and the Rijeka branch office of the Croatian Heritage Foundation. The fun continued later with great food, beverages and harmonica music.
The Emigrants’ Day celebration returned to the island of Ilovik last year – the first time since 1984. Ilovik is the southernmost island of the Lošinj archipelago. The event was staged on the 22nd of July on the square in front of the parish church of St Peter, featuring a performance by the Tuitamo band.
