Joining historians Marijan Buljan, Mislav Rubić PhD and Mihaela Kovačić was the head of the Split branch office of the Croatian Heritage Foundation Branka Bezić Filipović, presenting a biographic film about Ivan Lupis Vukić.
In early October the University Library of Split joined the celebration of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Lupis Vukić by organising an exhibition and symposium following on the recent donation by his children Mare Pilković (née Lupis) and Cvjetana Lupis Vukić of a part of his archives to the Library’s manuscript collection.
Professor Branko Matulić opened the Ivan Lupis Vukić (1896–1967) For a Culture of the Heart exhibition at the special collections department of the University Library of Split. On hand to present the exhibition were its author Mihaela Kovačić and the library’s director Petar Krolo.
The selection of some one hundred documents created in the 19th and 20th centuries offers just a glimpse into the rich life of this prominent Croatian politician, journalist and emigrant activist and his correspondence with many leading figures. The particularly rich trove of Lupis’ work as a publicist in the foreign and domestic press is a subject for numerous interdisciplinary studies. He wrote not only of emigrant politics and legislation, co-operatives, seafaring, tourism and the like, but also penned travelogues and translated selections from fiction literature. As a member of the circle of political activists around A. Trumbić, F. Supilo and P. Čingrija, Lupis was elected in 1908 as the youngest deputy to the Dalmatian assembly. He visited South America in 1928 gathering material on the history of our emigrants, which he then brought with him to Split.
A symposium was staged in Lupis’ native Viganj on the Pelješac peninsula and was co-organised with the history department of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split, with the support of the local community council, the Croatian Civic Centre of Viganj and the Municipality of Orebić. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a bust of Lupis by academy-educated sculptor Kuzma Kovačić in the cloister of the Croatian Civic Centre of Viganj, unveiled by Lupis’ daughter Mara Pilković.
