Attending the school in Crikvenica are participants from Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the United States of America, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Macedonia, Serbia (Vojvodina) and from across Croatia. This year has seen a record ninety-seven participants.
The Croatian Heritage Foundation’s traditional Winter School of Croatian Folklore kicked off January 3rd – this year it is celebrating the twenty-fifth consecutive year it has been hosted at Crikvenica’s Kaštel hotel. The school runs a full ten days, to January 12th. Participants will learn about the dances, folk costume, songs and instruments of the Croatian Adriatic, more precisely the dances of the islands of Krk, Cres, Rab, Pag, Silba, the towns of Split, Trogir, Kaštel, Čiovo, the Makarska littoral, the islands of Šolta, Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Mljet and Lastovo, the Pelješac peninsula, the Dubrovnik littoral, Konavle, Župa Dubrovačka, Rijeka Dubrovačka, the Neretva valley, the contra-dance of Dubrovnik, and the dances of the coast and islands of the Šibenik area. Also being taught are the dances of Croatians living in neighbouring countries in the Adriatic sphere – the dances of southern Herzegovina and of the Croatians of Boka Kotorska.
The Winter School of Croatian Folklore is led by eminent ethnologist and ethnochoreographer Andrija Ivančan. Traditional instruments will be taught by Vjekoslav Martinić, with the School’s tamburitza orchestra conducted by Tibor Bün, joined by guest lecturer maestro Siniša Leopold, head conductor of the Croatian Radio & Television Tamburitza Orchestra. They will be joined by other leading expert lecturers and renowned researchers of Croatian folklore: Dr. Goran Oreb, Tonči Tadin, Vidoslav Bagur, Nenad Milin, Damir Kremenić, Zlatan Sindičić, Josip Forjan (folk costumes) and Bojan Pogrmilović (singing) with the assistance of musical rehearser Antun Kottek.

A gala farewell concert is planned for the evening of the closing day of the Winter School of Folklore, January 12th, at the municipal sports arena in Crikvenica. The participants will as always, create the programme with the expert assistance of the lecturers.
