At Zagreb’s Interliber book fair publisher Školska knjiga is presenting Lijepa naša domovino (Our Beautiful Homeland), a unique book with the translation of our national anthem into five languages and lavish illustrations of the symbols of our national culture and history by the eminent illustrator Marsela Hajdinjak.
The picture book is for children in the country and abroad, with translations into English, Italian, French, German and Spanish by Mate Maras and Viktor Žmegač.
Editor Emica Calogjera Rogić said that the idea for the project came from the United States of America, from a woman living in New York of Mexican heritage married to a Croatian. She wanted a way to teach her child about the Croatian identity in the same way she could pass on her own Mexican identity.
The picture book also offers music notation for the anthem and tells of its origins, Calogjera Rogić notes, and is targeted to children in the country and abroad from ages eight and up.
The illustrations by Marsela Hajdinjak elucidate the lines of poetry in the anthem, subtly infused with the symbols of our culture, historical heritage and national symbols.
