Jadran, a legendary Croatian ensemble in Argentina, staged a brilliant concert on the 27th of August at Buenos Aires’ Usina del Arte theatre to celebrate its 70th anniversary.
The Valovi women’s singers, the Klapa BA a cappella group and the youth tamburitza orchestra performed under the leadership of maestro Santiago Cano.
The Jadran vocal ensemble was formed by a group of Croatian World War II refugees that had arrived via Camp Fermo in Italy. They held rehearsals at the Croatian civic centre in the Sveti Nikola Tavelić Croatian Catholic centre in Buenos Aires.
The group’s first conductor was Leonard Ramljak Nola, and has been led to date by eleven Croatians. Professor Ivo Degrel held the conductorship for the longest term. Jadran’s repertoire includes some 340 music scores, of that fifty were composed by Jadran conductors and other musicians in the diaspora communities. According to Josip Puches, who sang with the group from 1952 and served as its conductor from 1979 to 1989, Jadran has been home to some 330 singers and fourteen conductors. The members gathered at meetings, excursions and many events … and there have been some twenty marriages.
