Zrinski i Frankopan u hrvatskom stihu (“Zrinski and Frankopan in Croatian Verse”) is a collection of poetry published on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the tragic execution of Croatian nobles Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan. The book is edited by Vladimir Lončarević and Petra Babić and published as part of the Matrix Croatica Special Editions series.

The book is coming out on the 350th anniversary of the tragic execution in Wiener Neustadt on 30 April 1671 of Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan. The publisher notes that the Zrinski i Frankopan u hrvatskom stihu collection comprises a selection of lyrical and epic poems by Croatian poets related by theme or motif with the tragic finale of the political activity of Zrinski and Frankopan, which culminated in their arrest and execution.

The selection draws on Croatian periodicals, collections of poetry and anthologies.

The foreword is penned by Božidar Petrač. He notes that irrespective of the tides of history, there is no doubt that the Zrinski and Frankopan families—and in particular their leading lights, which include Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan—are well and alive in the popular conscience as torchbearers of opposition to foreign encroachment and dominance. Their courageous act has been and remains an inspiration to many in defending Croatian liberty and independence.

In their poems the selected authors bear witness to the undying glory of Zrinski and Frankopan, Petrač notes, adding that the selected poems had as their core message to carry forward the free spirit of Zrinski and Frankopan and to always remind us of their resistance to the capricious and, ultimately, self-serving interests of foreign powers. Their act of resistance as expounded in these works, Petrač elaborates, always emboldened the popular conscience of Croatians in various historical circumstances and shifts of fortune to—in spite of persecution and knowing that many have fallen in the defence of liberty—work towards achieving full freedom and independence.

Zrinski i Frankopan u hrvatskom stihu (“Zrinski and Frankopan in Croatian Verse”) presents 89 poems by 78 poets on 373 pages covering the period from Vladislav Menčetić and Ivan Goran Kovačić to Mile Pešorda and Sonja Delimar. (Hina)
