In this issue we feature a twenty-page report on the island of Šolta: a look at the history (Marina Knezović), the lime making tradition (Hrvoje Salopek), the indigenous grape and olive varieties, endemic species of flora and fauna (Darko Mihelj), people like Croatian-Canadian Dušan Bezić (Vesna Kukavica) and Eugen Buktenica, our only painter working in the naïve style from our southern region of Dalmatia.

 

This year’s September double issue is now available. The summer themed cover art is by photographer Mato Zeman. The back of the issue presents Silvija Butković’s view of the quotidian reality we are faced with in the climate of the current pandemic. This issue features a special twenty-page report on the island of Šolta: a look at the history by Marina Knezović, the lime making tradition (Hrvoje Salopek), the indigenous grape and olive varieties, endemic species of flora and fauna (Darko Mihelj), and people like Croatian-Canadian Dušan Bezić (Vesna Kukavica) and Eugen Buktenica, our only painter working in the naïve style from the southern Croatian region of Dalmatia. The 570th anniversary of the birth of literary great Marko Marulić, who made frequent visits to the recently restored house of his relatives on the island of Šolta, was commemorated at a monument raised in his honour in the German capital of Berlin. In his column on Croatian musicians Davor Schopf writes on the 10th anniversary of the passing of Dragica (Carla) Martinis, one of the top Croatian sopranos of the twentieth century and first soprano for the Italian repertoire at the Vienna Opera, laid to rest in the Austrian capital of Vienna. Also in this issue read all about the 25th anniversary of Operation Storm (Hrvoje Salopek), the 25th film festival in Orašje in Bosnia-Herzegovina, now the Ivo Gregurević Days of Croatian Film (Nada Koturić), the 150th anniversary of the Croatian national revival movement among the Croatians of the Danube River basin region (Marin Knezović), the 110th anniversary of Zagreb’s electric tram (Ljerka Galic), the 100th anniversary of the birth of Zadar native and photographer Zvonimir Brkan (Zrinka Brkan), the 35th anniversary of the Dubrovački Kavaljeri ensemble (Josip Čenić). Mirjana Piskulić and Marin Knezović write about folk costume reviews were staged in Tomislavgrad (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Und (Hungary). Sara Večeralo interviewed musician Žarko Marinković, a fourth-generation descendant of Croatians who immigrated to Chile, while Ljerka Galic spoke with young Irish professor of mathematics Alan Loane—his part Croatian ancestry has seen him summering on the island of Susak and honeymooning on the island of Šolta. In our new section on Croatian language instructorships we present the experiences of teaching assistant Boris Rozga at the Sorbonne university in Paris. In our Sociological Puzzle section we discuss the parallels between the summer culture events in our coastal cities of Rijeka and Split (Nino Sorić). Vesna Kukavica offers a detailed look at the oeuvre and contribution to Croatian and French culture of Ante Glibota, who passed away in Paris (France). Željko Rupić covers current affairs, including the news from the State Office for Croats Abroad, the tenth session of our parliament and developments in sports.
