A long time “foreign minister” and one of the most respected and influential Catholic priests in Croatia, Monsignor Vladimir Stanković, passed away yesterday at the St Joseph clergy retirement home in Zagreb, reports Catholic information agency IKA.
Monsignor Stanković was, reports IKA, a long-standing associate of three cardinals and was for decades the closest advisor to Zagreb Archbishop and Cardinal Franjo Kuharić, charged particularly with the task of contact with the Croatian Catholic missions and Croatians living around the world. Cardinal Kuharić on several occasions nominated him as his successor.
Monsignor Vladimir Stanković was born in Kutina on the 24th of February 1930 and was a close aid to Zagreb archbishops and Cardinals Franjo Šeper, Franjo Kuharić and Josip Bozanić, and for three decades served as the director of the pastoral office for Croatians abroad.
He served as the director of the Croatian Caritas during the hardest times of the Homeland War. He has published a number of notable books and many articles, also bringing the first news from the Second Vatican Council, IKA reports.
