The working meeting between the CHF Director and the Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago focused on preserving Meštrović’s sculptures, supporting the Croatian diaspora, and further developing cooperation for the benefit of the Croatian community.
As part of a working visit to Chicago, CHF Director Zdeslav Milas met with the Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago, Sanja Laković, at the premises of the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago has been an important support for Croatian citizens and the numerous Croats living in the American Midwest for decades. In addition to providing consular support and a range of services to Croatian citizens, the Consulate actively cultivates links with the Croatian diaspora, supports the work of Croatian organizations, cultural and educational institutions and promotes the interests of the Republic of Croatia.
Special value is given to this mission by Consul General Sanja Laković. Among Croats in Chicago and throughout the consular area, she enjoys the sincere respect, trust, and affection she has gained through her dedicated work, openness, and human approach. Her doors are always open to the Croatian community, and her willingness to listen, assist, and find solutions has brought her much appreciation from many Croats. Such a relationship is not only part of diplomatic obligations, but also an expression of a sincere connection with the Croatian diaspora and an understanding of its needs.

An important place in the work of Consul General Sanja Laković is occupied by her persistent fight for the preservation of Meštrović’s monumental sculptures “The Archer” and “The Spearman”, known as the Indians, one of the most recognizable symbols of Chicago and one of the most valuable achievements of Croatian cultural heritage outside the homeland. When the sculptures were among the monuments whose removal was being considered as part of the public monument review process in Chicago, the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago, led by Consul General Sanja Laković, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, launched a demanding diplomatic initiative to protect the work of the greatest Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović. Thanks to the joint efforts of Croatian diplomacy, the sculptures were preserved and remain in their place as a lasting symbol of artistic excellence and Croatian presence in Chicago. The Croatian community takes special pride in this success and sincerely thanks Sanja Laković for her dedication, perseverance, and responsibility in protecting Croatian cultural heritage and representing the interests of the Republic of Croatia with dignity.
During a cordial conversation between Director Milas and Consul General Sanja Laković, they confirmed the importance of continued cooperation between the Croatian Heritage Foundation and the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago in strengthening ties between homeland and diaspora Croatia.
