Thanks to the exceptional efforts of the staff of the Museum of Lika, and with no additional funding, an exhibition of the paintings of Kristian Kreković opened in Gospić in the evening hours of 30 October. The works are from Croatian Government donations in 1991 and 1994 from the collections of the Croatian Heritage Foundation, the Modern Gallery and the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb.

The many who gathered were addressed by the director of the Museum of Lika Vesna Bunčić, and on behalf of the Croatian Heritage Foundation in Zagreb Ljerka Galic, author and coordinator of last year’s exhibition to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Kristian Kreković.
In his speech CHF director Marin Knezović, among other things, noted that, “Kreković through his life and work illustrates what makes the Croatian emigrant communities of special importance for Croatia and its culture. It, namely, links us with faraway lands and cultures, often in surprising ways. Few nations can pride themselves of this. This is why Kreković continues to resonate in the 21st century, the century of an intense mixing of cultures, and that is why this exhibition is important and valuable. “

The exhibition, which also marked the 47th opening of the “Likanale” event, was declared open by Deputy Mayor Marta Grgurić, who noted Kreković’s paternal ancestry from the Lika region by his father, a native of Perušić, and his significance in Croatian art.
