Tihomil Rađa – The Societal Context of Croatian Intellectual Liberal-Democratic Emigrants is a miscellany published by Zagreb’s Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies and the Croatian Heritage Foundation. Tihomil Rađa – The Societal Context of Croatian Intellectual Liberal-Democratic Emigrants is a miscellany published by Zagreb’s Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies and the Croatian Heritage Foundation. The miscellany presents the lectures given at a symposium on the Life and Work of Dr Tihomil Rađa staged in Sinj in December of 2012 by co-organisers the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies and the City of Sinj.
The miscellany offers eighteen articles on the life and work of Dr Tihomil Rađa, a selected bibliography of his work, an introduction by the volume’s editor Marina Perić Kaselj and a foreword by Aleksandar Vukić. The articles are penned by Zlatko Šram, Jakov Žižić, Marina Perić Kaselj, Anđelko Vlašić, Tihomir Nuić, Gojko Borić, Nikica Mihaljević, Stjepan Šulek, Josip Kregar, Jakša Kušan, Vladimir Pavlinić, Branko Salaj, Mauricij Frka Petešić, Joško Kontić, Ivo Vlajčević and Josip Šentija. The book was reviewed by Berto Šalaj PhD of the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Political Science and Stipan Tadić PhD of the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences.
Berto Šalaj notes that the miscellany offers direct insight into the work of Tihomil Rađa as a member of the emigrant community and indirectly touches upon the activity of Croatian political émigrés as a whole. What makes this miscellany exceptional is that it delves into the work of a man that endeavoured to base his political activity in the Croatian communities abroad on the ideals of liberal democracy rather than on political extremism and radicalism.
This miscellany is also marks a debut – a first of its kind – in the scientific study of Croatian political émigrés. This topic has to date largely been circumvented in scientific research, a state of affairs that created fertile ground for prejudicial and negative sentiments towards Croatian political émigrés on the whole, sentiments fomented and nurtured by the communist regime of the defunct Yugoslavia.
Tihomil Rađa was born in Sinj in 1928. He fled communist Yugoslavia in 1955 for political reasons and was active in political exile in Switzerland up to 1990. With the instalment of a democratic government in Croatia he returned to his homeland and was active in promoting democratic awareness and work. He passed away in Switzerland in 2002 and was laid to rest in his native Sinj.
