Joining the members of emigrants’ clubs active in the New York and New Jersey area, the Island of Krk Women’s Club, the Dubašnica Social Club and the Island of Krk Club at this year’s event was a group of Croatian emigrants from Australia.
Vrbnik on Krk was the venue for another Island of Krk Emigrants’ Day, traditionally held on the first day of the month of August. The host of this year’s gathering, the Municipality of Vrbnik, welcomed the emigrants visiting their native island during the summer holidays.
Joining the members of emigrants’ clubs active in the New York and New Jersey area, the Island of Krk Women’s Club, the Dubašnica Social Club and the Island of Krk Club at this year’s event was a group of Croatian emigrants from Australia. On hand for this special event celebrating emigrants from the island of Krk were the mayors of municipalities on the island and a representative of the Croatian Heritage Foundation.
The programme opened at 6 pm with a holy mass at the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary led by Dr Anton Bozanić. After the mass the gathered learned about the history of Vrbnik at the Vrbnik Visual Arts Identity Museum housed in the church’s bell tower.
There, visitors had an opportunity to view exhibits of sacral and traditional heritage. A small part of the wealth of folklore and music heritage of the Vrbnik area was demonstrated to our emigrants through a performance staged at the popular Škujici venue by a folklore ensemble and sopile (a descendant of the medieval shawn instrument) players.
