The Valovi women’s vocal ensemble has released Buenas muchachas (Good Girls), their second CD, offering an overview of their musical careers through adaptations of Croatian klapa melodies and contemporary popular music compositions with instrumental accompaniment. The ensemble consists of nine women, the daughters and granddaughters of Croatian immigrants, and their Good Girls reaffirms the maturity of sound they have achieved over almost fifteen years of continual work, during which time they have impressed their female vocal stamp on compositions about love expressed through the native land, nature, the sea and flowers, paying homage to the homeland of their ancestors and the homeland in which were born.
The vocal ensemble is made up of members: Cecilia Fernández Šarić, Ana Premuž (first sopranos); Daria Trošelj, Karina Jerković (second sopranos); Vlasta Jurić, Jelena Nadinić, Valeria Fernández Šarić (first contraltos); Silvia Detelić, Stella Hubmayer (second contraltos).
The recording of the CD was made possible by the support of the Croatian State Office for Croats Abroad and created in the studio under the watchful eye of maestro Javier Zentner, responsible for the many special musical arrangements of the Valovi vocal ensemble and their conductor.
Other members of the local Croatian community also took part in this project. The children of the Pequeña Escuelita (Little School) were responsible for designing the cover art by way of the “Paint the Valovi” competition. The winning illustration by Milagros Zorić is on the CD cover.
The other illustrations submitted are found in the CD jewel case sleeves. The author of the unified final design is Karina Jerković. The photos are by Mariano Aramburu Trošelj.
Signing off on the production is the Studio El Santito, led by producer Ivan Marković, responsible for the adaptation and mixing at the GlazGlas Estudio studio, assisted by Esteban Kralj. Leo Medero provided piano accompaniment.
Following their participation in the musical ensemble of the Croatian Catholic University Student association the members of the Valovi (Olas in Spanish) ensemble gathered in 2001 and decided to sing together again as an ensemble with the aim of performing renditions from the wealth of Croatian musical heritage and compositions from Argentinean and world music.
In 2002 they decided to dedicate themselves to a cappella singing and learn Croatian klapa singing as female klapa ensembles began to make their mark in Croatia proper.
Today the repertoire of the Valovi ensemble consists of world music compositions in Croatian, English and Spanish, performed in a particular style now an integral part of the history of the Croatian community in Argentina.
The CD is available for purchase by e-mail order at, or by directly contacting the members of the Valovi ensemble to order delivery. The promo price is 150 Argentine pesos.
