Vojvodina Croatians celebrated their traditional Veliko Prelo culture event in Subotica on Saturday 25 January. The event has a deep tradition going back to 1879.
The participants follow a long-established scenario with some six hundred attendees entertained by a grand Prelo tamburitza orchestra, comprised this year of the members of the Hajo, Biseri, Ravnica and Ruža ensembles. Another traditional part of the event is a best traditional folk costume pageant featuring the local young women, and a selection of the best Prelo song. Croatian Heritage Foundation director Mijo Marić was on hand to present prizes for the best poetry inspired by the Prelo, once a traditional form of communal work and amusement in which rural communities pooled their efforts.
