Premiere Screening of Peter Tomich Documentary

The documentary is directed by Ištvan Filaković, with screenplay by Vladimir Brnardić and Nenad Bach, Dražen Lipka serving as director of photography, editing by Mladen Radaković, and with music composed by Nenad Bach. The original soundtrack was recorded by the Croatian Radio and Television Symphonic Orchestra under conductor Alan Bjelinski.

Heroji se ne zaboravljaju (Heroes are Not Forgotten) is a documentary movie produced by state owned broadcaster Hrvatska Televizija that tells the story of Peter Tomich, a hero of the United States of America that gave up his life during the attack led by Japan’s military against Pearl Harbour on the 7th of December 1941, taking actions that saved the lives of several hundred sailors aboard the stricken ship USS Utah. The premiere screening was staged in Zagreb on the 7th of December.

For his heroic actions Tomich (1893–1941) was posthumously decorated with the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States of America, awarded by the president of that country in the name of the United States Congress.

The premiere screening was hosted by the Zvonimir Armed Forces Centre and saw the HRT Symphonic Orchestra perform Nenad Bach’s original score under conductor Olja Dešić. Bach is a musician of Croatian roots that has lived in the United States of America since the 1980s. the documentary was broadcast on the Croatian national broadcaster’s Channel 1 on the 8th of December.

It took almost a decade or investigation and evidence seeking, and even some court proceedings, for retired United States rear admiral Robert Lunney to locate Tomich’s relatives in Prolog, a village in the Herzegovina region. One of the few Medals of Honor that had never been officially presented to the next of kin was finally presented to the surviving relatives in 2006 on board the USS Enterprise, the US Navy’s largest aircraft carrier, as it lay at anchor in the waters off Split.
