The October issue of our monthly Matica magazine showcases the Riječina River. The cover illustrations feature the work of two artists from Rijeka, designer Diana Sokolić and pottery artist Adam Dworski. Details of the history of this short river and the port city of Rijeka where it flows into the sea are related by Theodor de Canziani. Nino Sorić tells of the two-hundred year history of the renowned paper mill that operated here, Darko Mihelj describes the flora of the area, home to over one thousand species, and Davor Schopf discusses the work of Ivo Robić, a popular singer of ballads much of whose career was centred in and around the Kvarner region but whose talent garnered acclaim far outside our borders. We also report on new book promotions featuring the latest books by Jadranka Klobučar Gros (Austria) in Dubrovnik, Katarina Pejaković (Canada) at the CHF headquarters in Zagreb, and Marcos Pejacsevich (Argentina). Vesna Kukavica presents an Internet platform that showcases the translations of works by Croatian authors, with a particular focus on bilingual editions. In our continuing look at Croatian language lectors abroad this month we learn of the Croatian language lector in Budapest. Robert Bebek reports on an online presentation via the video conferencing service of the Zoom company on the occasion of the European Day of Languages focused on the Croatian language and culture centre of the Taras Shevchenko National University in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. Also, in this issue Stjepan Esteban Blažević tells of his family’s relocation to Croatia from Argentina.
