The March issue of the Croatian Heritage Foundation’s monthly Matica magazine features top events of all-Croatian and international significance. We cover the inauguration in Zagreb of Croatia’s fifth head of state since the country regained its independence, the official kick-off for Rijeka’s year as one of the European capitals of culture, and events at the Croatian Heritage Foundation headquarters: the promotion of the Croatian Emigrant Almanac, a presentation of a culinary event showcasing the culinary delights of Blato, and the opening of an exhibition featuring painter Ankica Perge Karačić, one of the women to receive an award at this year’s event hosted by the Toronto-based Croatian Women’s Network. We also look at the traditional Night of Museums event, focusing on the Archaeological Museum of Split (the nation’s oldest museum), and Zagreb’s Museum of Arts and Crafts. The ancient town of Labin on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast is celebrating the 500th birthday of legendary humanist Matthias Flacius Illyricus. This month’s issue is dedicated to Cres, the largest island in the Adriatic Sea.
