Matica Magazine: The Easter Issue

6 Min Read

This issue focuses on the Krka River: we look at this watercourse through the lens of Marin Knezović’s section on history, Darko Mihelj’s look at our endemic flora, Sanja Vulić’s cues in communication, Nika Jakab’s zoology section, and the excellent illustrated section penned by Željko Rupić. Davor Schopf brings us a pair of musicians whose lives were touched by the towns of Sisak and Glina, sites of a recent series of earthquakes.

In the March issue of our monthly Matica magazine we extend Easter greetings with cover art featuring the work of an Argentinean of Croatian background that has relocated to the homeland and was interviewed by Barbara Buršić, a reproduction on the back cover of the common or bluecrown passionflower, often known in Croatia by the folk name Crown of Jesus flower, and a look back at a series of Lent concerts the CHF staged as a part of the Homeland War effort that secured our independence (Nives Antoljak).

Also in this issue read our interview with Nino Sorić about his new book on Croatians in the early phases of the First World War. Đuro Vidmarović walks us through the historical heritage of ethnic Croatians in the Hungarian village of Szalánta and we learn of the Croatian language lector in Hungary’s Baja.

News on events and initiatives among our overseas diaspora communities feature New York’s Club Dubrovnik Inc., Dr Jeana Havidich in North America, Tanya Unkovich in New Zealand, and the ethnic Croatian groups in Brazil.

Little known facts about the Croatian roots of the Dalmatian dog are featured on three pages.

Also featured are leading ethnic Croatians abroad: Chilean Antonio Skármeta, who is celebrating his eightieth birthday, artists Karen Oremuš of Canada and Michael Barbarić of the United States of America, and the young and enterprising Tihana Jana Vukić from Switzerland.

In her column Click: Going Home Vesna Kukavica looks at the 2021 Year of Reading in Croatia and the twentieth anniversary of the creation of a replica of a fifteenth century Gutenberg-type printing press in the town of Roč in Istra County, a hub of Glagolitic writing and printing activity in the medieval period.

In our continuing look at Croatian language lectors abroad we present experienced lector Katja Peruško in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

Željko Rupić continues to keep us abreast of current events, sports, and news from the State Office for Croats Abroad.

Our long-time columnist Šimun Šito Ćorić speaks in favour of on-the-job kindness, a sentiment our editor Ljerka Galic wholeheartedly echoes and offers as her overarching message in this year.

The director and staff of the Croatian Heritage Foundation and the editorial board of Matica magazine wish you all the best this Easter!
