The latest double issue of Matica, the magazine of the Croatian Heritage Foundation, offers fascinating articles and introduces a new design look. The cover features writer and statesman Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski (1816–1889), with the magazine covering events in the first two months of the current year.
Among the fascinating articles is a report on the Winter School of Folklore staged in Koprivnica, the sixth Croatian as a Second & Foreign Language (HIDIS) symposium and events at the Croatian Heritage Foundation headquarters: the God Bless, Croatia! – Greetings from the Native Land exhibition of photographs and the promotion of a book by Valentina Krčmar, a returnee from Canada. Readers will learn about several excellent new books: Dr Adolf Polegubić’s The Pastoral Care of Croatians in Germany), a miscellany on Nikola Benčić, The Canon of Croatian Poetry and Šimun Šito Ćorić’s Looks Like There Was No Other Way. Žejlko Holjevac writes about Stjepan Krpan and his book on the Croatian enclave in Romania. The issue also features obituaries on prominent figures that recently passed away: Don Anto Baković, Dr Jozef Krainer from Austria and choreographer Antun Kričković from Hungary.
The latest issue features the always fascinating regular columnists and articles on the jubilee Croatian Ball in Vienna, Minister Stier’s meeting with Gradišće Croats, a meeting in Zagreb with participants of a Croatian language course, the anniversary in Vienna of the Kolo-Slavuj folklore ensemble and much more. This double issue also bring Franjo Bertović and Irena Ozimec’s article on American Croatians and their activities and Karmen Vrljičak’s report on the Croatians of Argentina.
Also in the news is the must-visit Internet site created by art historian and Matica contributor professor Vladimir P. Goss. At the helm of Matica magazine for another year is Hrvoje Salopek, with design, layout and prepress by Krunoslav Vilček.
