The Croata magazine of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor is printed with the support of the Croatian State Office for Croats Abroad and can be found in print form at the premises of the association and online at the www.hkdm.si portal.

Marko Mandir is the chief editor of the Croata magazine of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor. Serving on the editorial board are Koraljka Čeh, Sanja Brumen, Štefica Hojsak, priest Ivan Dodlek, Mario Berdič, Marijo Malkoč, Gregor Potisk and Marijan Mario Maček. The magazine has been published regularly since 2002, with several issues per year, depending on the news load and available financing. The Croatian language magazine aims to inform the association membership and interested readers in Slovenia, Croatia and the broader region about local activities and news.

The latest December 2016 issue features articles by Koraljka Čeh on ancestors in Slovakia, by Marijo Malkoč on distant relatives among the Croatians of Punta Arenas, by Đanino Kutnjak on Croatian language instruction in Slovenia, by Sanja Brumen on how a bilingual environment can enrich a child’s knowledge and by Marijan Mario Maček on the history of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor. Also featured in the December issue are articles penned by Ivan Dodlek, Franjo Talan, Dunja Bezjak, Mario Berdič, Kata Šikić Čubrić and Gregor Potisk. The magazine also reprinted an article that appeared in our own Matica magazine by Željko Holjevac on the Battle of Vis.

In the editor’s word, serving president of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor Marko Mandir notes that, “we are celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor with a broad scope of culture events, ranging from our now traditional concerts featuring the Klapa Dalmari band, a concert featuring the duo ClaVinet at the wonderful SNG Maribor theatre house, numerous exhibitions featuring the work of the members of our Milena Lah art section in Maribor and the environs, the 3rd urban art colony, a memorial chess tournament and a picnic hosted by the Blessed Aloysius Stepinac Croatian Catholic Mission. (…)

Pursuant to our statutes we held an assembly at the beginning of this year (2016) at which I was honoured to win the majority of votes cast to lead our organisation for another four-year term. I wish to thank the other nominee and co-founder of our association Mario Maček for his confidence and support. (….)

In our new Slovenian homeland and in our efforts to preserve our Croatian identity and resist assimilation, few as we are, we cannot afford division into opposing camps and I reiterate my appeal for unity; in this regard I hope to see the further deepening of our collaboration with our association in Maribor and the local Catholic Mission and within the Federation of Croatian Association of Slovenia. As of this year we have been granted the status of an association of public interest in the domain of culture – this opens the possibility of tax deductible contributions in support of our continuing work”.

The Croata magazine of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor is printed with the support of the Croatian State Office for Croats Abroad and can be found in print form at the premises of the association and we hope to see it regularly updated online at the www.hkdm.si portal.
