Mateo Fistonić was the oldest living ethnic Croatian in Chile and passed away in his 104th year. He was one of the founders of the Croatian civic centre in Iquique in the north of Chile.

He travelled to Croatia in 1957 and 1998 to visit relatives. On his second trip he was accompanied by his grandchildren – the then 83-year-old grandfather had no trouble touring the walls of Dubrovnik.
