The Blatski Fižuli Culture Institution and the Municipality of Blato Tourism Board showcased their new projects and announced the upcoming 7th Days of Blato’s Lumblija at an event hosted by the Dubrovnik branch office of the Croatian Heritage Foundation.

Along with the Days of Blato’s Lumblija the event also showcased the 4 Islands / 4 Towns / 4 Recipes project.

Speaking for the Blatski Fižuli Culture Institution Ivana Sardelić noted that, “Blato is a place many people have moved out of and we have discussed this topic for many years. Last year we had our first ever presentation in Split of the 4 Islands / 4 Towns / 4 Recipes project. The idea was to link up four islands that have seen an exceptionally high rate of emigration: Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula, and four settlements on these islands: Dol on Brač Island, Starigrad on Hvar Island, Vis on Vis Island and Blato on Korčula Island, through four recipes. These are the Starogradski Paprenjak biscuit, the Viška Pogača, the Hrapoćuša torte from Dol and the Lumblija of Blato. We chose these recipes because, as you know, the periods of emigration were very hard on many people. They took with them the flavours and aromas of their native region when they left. We though that it was precisely these generational recipes were something we could bring together in our story. All four dishes have a very long history and people that left these places took the recipes with them.”

As new generations replaced the old, and with the inevitable impact of the culinary habits and culture of the new homelands, the recipes were modified and today, in most cases, these dishes are not made following the original recipes. The objective of the 4 Islands / 4 Towns / 4 Recipes project is to revive and promote the culinary heritage of this area among the diaspora communities in their original forms.

The 7th Days of Blato’s Lumblija aim to promote and preserve the Lumblija sweetbread. This year’s event programme will include a workshop on how to make Lumblija, a special guest appearance, representatives of the 4 Islands / 4 Towns / 4 Recipes project, workshops on creating the Starogradski Paprenjak biscuit and the Viška Pogača, and presentations of the Dol eco/ethno village and the Hrapoćuša torte from Dol.

The event programme closed on the 27th of October with an exhibition and sampling of the Lumbilja of Blato and the selection of the best Lumblija in 2018. The closing also featured a tasting of local Blato liqueurs, special pomace brandies (rakija) and other excellent local products from family farms, and presentations and sampling of the Starogradski Paprenjak biscuit, the Viška Pogača, the Hrapoćuša torte from Dol and the Lumblija of Blato.
