Canadian Autumn in My Eye, Croatia in My Heart

Family doctor Davorka Križaj Kapljić’s second collection of poems was recently promoted in Toronto. Her poetry revolves largely around the love she feels for her native land and her childhood memories of the Međimurje region and Zagreb.

Križaj Kapljić’s first collection of poems Sjećanja i sutoni (Memories and Twilights) was published in 2007, followed in 2018 by a second collection titled Pred hižnim pocekom (At the Threshold). In the second collection half of the poems are written in the Kajkavian dialect of Croatian and the reminder in Standard Croatian. Davorka Križaj Kapljić began writing poetry as a primary school pupil at Vladimir Nazor Elementary School in Zagreb.

Ms Križaj Kapljić is known in the local ethnic Croatian community as a family doctor who has worked in Mississauga for the past twenty-five years and continues to serve as part of hospital staff. She lives between Canada and Croatia, spending seven months of the year providing medical care in Canada and five months in Croatia. She has passed her love of the homeland on to her children who nurture a very special bond with Croatia.
