CHF Director Zdeslav Milas met with Croats from northern Germany and presented the CHF’s programs and the opportunities for stronger ties with the Homeland and return to Croatia
On September 11, 2026, the packed hall of the Catholic Academy in Hamburg served as a place of encounter, conversation, and a strong connection between the Croatian community and the homeland. Organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Hamburg, CHF Director Zdeslav Milas delivered a professional presentation before representatives of Croatian organizations and Croats from northern Germany.
The host, Consul General Kristijan Tušek, welcomed the attendees, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to the Federal Republic of Germany, Gordan Bakota, addressed the audience.
Director Milas presented the activities and programs of the Croatian Heritage Foundation, with special emphasis on learning and nurturing the Croatian language, preserving Croatian identity and transferring cultural heritage to younger generations. Among other programs, he presented the Little School of Croatian Language and Culture, the Summer and Winter School of Croatian Folklore and the “Toys at Heart” program, as well as other programs by which Matica connects Croats abroad with the Homeland.
The issues related to returning to Croatia held a special place in the conversation. Ambassador Bakota, Consul General Tušek and Director Milas presented the programs and measures through which the Government of the Republic of Croatia supports the return of Croatian emigrants and their descendants, and the open discussion also provided an opportunity for specific questions about the possibilities of return, life and reconnection with Croatia.
Director Milas emphasized the importance of synergy between Croatian institutions, the diplomatic and consular network, the Croatian Heritage Foundation, and Croatian communities abroad, because joint action is how information, programs, and opportunities can reach every Croat who wants to preserve ties or return to Croatia.
That such an immediate dialogue is needed was best demonstrated by the crowded halls, numerous questions and significant interest of those gathered. Talks with Director Milas continued after the official part of the program, in direct and cordial socializing with representatives of organizations and the Croatian community.
“The Croatian Heritage Foundation wants to be a place of meeting, cooperation and trust, the home of all Croats outside the Republic of Croatia. Our task is to preserve the Croatian language and identity, connect generations and be a strong link between the Homeland and our people around the world,” said Director Milas.
