WINTER SCHOOL OF CROATIAN FOLKLORE
DANCES OF THE ADRIATIC REGION

At the Winter School of Croatian Folklore participants will cover the dances, folk costumes, songs and instruments of Croatia’s ADRIATIC REGION.
Along with practical dance instruction the school will also include lectures on folk costumes and songs and instruments (tamboura type and traditional). The school programme also covers the dances and music of the islands and coastal towns and cities of Krk, Cres, Rab, Pag, Silba, Split, Trogir, Kaštela, Čiovo, Makarsko primorje, Šolta, Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Mljet, Lastovo, the Pelješac peninsula, the Dubrovačko primorje region, Konavle, Župa dubrovačka, Rijeka dubrovačka, the Neretva valley, the kontradanca (counter-dance) of Dubrovnik and the dances of the Šibenik coastal area and islands.
The programme will also cover the dances of Croatians in neighbouring countries that fall under the Adriatic cultural sphere: the dances and songs of southern Herzegovina and the dances of the Croatians of Boka Kotorska.
Andrija Ivančan, the artistic director of our national folk dance and vocal ensemble Lado, will serve as the expert programme manager, with the tamboura section led by Tibor Bun, a well-known tamburitza expert. Music pedagogue Vjekoslav Martinić, an eminent traditional instrument maker, will lead the traditional instruments section. On hand as guest lecturer will be maestro Siniša Leopold, the head conductor of the Croatian Radio and Television Tamburitza Orchestra.
Lectures will also be given by other top experts in the fields of folklore and ethnochoreology and renowned researchers of Croatian folklore: Tonči Tadin, Vidoslav Bagur, Nenad Milin, Damir Kremenić, Goran Oreb, Katarina Horvatović and Kristina Benko Markovica, joined by music rehearser Antun Kottek. They will all be ably assisted by Iva Cvetko and Martin Durbek.
Participants are offered a choice of one of the three offered sections:
- DANCE (section head: Andrija Ivančan)
- PLAYING THE TAMBOURA (section head: Tibor Bün, guest lecturer: maestro Siniša Leopold)
- PLAYING TRADITIONAL CROATIAN INSTRUMENTS (section head: Vjekoslav Martinić)
Tuition: EUR 80 or HRK 600 per person
