The Zvonimir Gallery was the venue Wednesday, July 9th for the opening of “Paper”, an exhibition featuring young artists Slađana Matić Trstenjak and Milan Ketiš, both members of the Croatian Culture Association of Maribor (HKDM).
This was the first time the gallery played host to large format paintings in combined techniques (mostly collage). To the northern side are Slađana’s penetrating, if somewhat rigid colours and an abundance of black, with motifs that seem to tear away the frame and step into the viewer’s space. The south side of the gallery was occupied by the “gentler” and more subdued work, as if imbued in some mysterious fluid, of the student Milan.
The event was opened with greetings from gallery curator Zoran Batušić and Marko Mandir, president of the HKDM. The young artists thanked the gallery for the opportunity to exhibit their work.
“In the recognisable artistic expression of painter Slađana Matić Trstenjak we have on the one hand a surprising mirroring of German expressionism with a marked sense of the past, a deformed formation of shape and a vigorous, often black contour,” said art critic Mario Berdić at the opening. Commenting the work of Milan Ketiš he noted that, “(His) ideal composition corresponds to spatial nodes, which is reflected directly in his predominant figural motifs.”
Also performing at the opening was the young Zagreb band Mnogi Drugi. The exhibition runs through to the 1st of August.
