As we do battle with the Covid-19 pandemic scare we managed to hold our Lodge 530 summer picnic event to celebrate a major anniversary for the lodge, its 30th. These thirty years of work have seen enviable results, of which we are all proud. The Ogulin Lodge was founded in late August of 1990, and was issued a charter on 9 September bringing it into the fold of the Croatian Fraternal Union. Many of the lodge officers elected at the founding meeting have been re-elected every year and continue to diligently carry out their duties.
The picnic was staged on 5 September at Tower Rd. in St. Thomas, at the estate of the Franjo and Ankica Rupčić. Only 42 lodge members gathered on account of the pandemic fears, abiding by all the measures imposed by the health authorities. Disinfectants and other protective gear were prepared and donated by John and Henrietta Karn. Lodge secretary Darinka Cindrić welcomed everyone and warned of the importance of security measures and the conduct of everyone on hand.
The event included the traditional picnic menu and a bocce competition. It was organised by the fraternal activities director Mike (Mijo) Lukiček. The winners of this year’s bocce tournament were Drago Magdić and Monica Reid (right), with fraternal activities director Mike Lukiček and finalists Ljubica B. Cox and Ljubo Bošnjak (middle). The competition has been held for years. The winners receive a trophy and the runner ups a consolation prize in the form of a bottle of wine. The trophy, which goes from winner to winner every year, is inscribed with the names of the annual winners. We were delighted to see the parish priest at the Croatian church in London (Ontario), friar Jozo Grubišić, also attend the picnic and take part in the competition. Since Mirjana and I were unable to travel to St. Thomas on account of the closed borders between the United States of America and Canada, we worked out all the details over the phone. On location were the lodge officers: secretary Darinka Cindrić, treasurer Franjo Rupčić, director Mike Lukiček, director of nest 530 Ljubica B. Cox, chair of the board of trustees Tonika Salopek, trustees Ankica Rupčić and Gordana Pejčinović, and sports committee member Ante Pejčinović. The Karn’s delighted everyone with their bus. It arrived, but empty. According to the driver the passengers were held up at the border on account of the coronavirus measures. Everything else followed the good old tradition of welcoming guests. We thank everyone and congratulate them on their efforts and work. (Zajedničar)
