In 2019 the German city of Darmstadt will celebrate a Year of Croatian Culture. The year kicked off with a spiritual retreat led by the priest Marko Glogović with musical accompaniment provided by the Emanuel band, and the opening of friar Nediljko Brečić’s and Dujo Jurković’s Art in Wood and Stone exhibition on the 10th of February.

The event, staged on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Croatian Catholic Community of Darmstadt, gathered over a thousand members and guests of CCC Darmstadt from across this central German region for the first three days of spiritual and cultural activities at St Fidelis church and the neighbouring parish hall. The inspiration of the monks from Zagreb and the touching interpretations offered by Domagoj Pavin, Franciska Perković and the other members of the Emanuel band created an unforgettable atmosphere that will long be remembered in Darmstadt. The spiritual segment of the programme closed with a celebration of the Roman Catholic eucharist led by priest Marko Glogović and concelebrated with friar Nediljko Brečić and German parish priest Johannes Gans. The Biseri folklore ensemble took part in the celebration of the mass wearing folk costumes. The Year of Croatian Culture programme continued with the opening of friar Nediljko Brečić’s and Dujo Jurković’s Art in Wood and Stone exhibition. The launch of the Year of Croatian Culture in Darmstadt was rounded out with the presentation of a monograph on the fiftieth anniversary of the Croatian Catholic Community of Darmstadt. The book, in Croatian and German, includes a chronological overview of the mission’s history. It was presented by editors Edi Zelić, friar Nediljko Brečić and Dr Dinko Aračić.

The culture and arts programme in Darmstadt will continue in May with a lecture by the Croatian ambassador to Germany Gordan Grlić-Radman and a presentation of Rijeka, Croatia’s leading port city and the European Culture Capital in 2020.
