The “Kalamota – Far From Light” exhibition was opened at the Trajko Prokopiev Centre for Culture by Ivan Šerkinić, president of the Kumanovo chapter of the Croatian Community in Macedonia.
“Kalamota – Far From Light”, is an exhibition of photographs by Vlaho Brangjolica opened at the Trajko Prokopiev Centre for Culture to a large audience on November 27th by Ivan Šerkinić, president of the Kumanovo chapter of the Croatian Community in Macedonia. On hand to speak of the photographer’s professional oeuvre was Violeta Kalić.
Vlaho Brangjolica was born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1960. He graduated from the Teacher’s Academy in 1987 and from the Ss Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje’s Faculty of Fine Arts. He earned his master’s degrees in 1995 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and then at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje.
The artist draws his inspiration from Koločep – one of the few, if not the only Adriatic island with two names. The local population almost exclusively uses the unofficial name Kalamota and refer to themselves as Kalamotezi. In the past the island was also known as Calamotta. In the oldest known records of the parish archive on Koločep from 1497 the island is designated as Calamotta. By all accounts the name is of Greek origin, as the Greek word Kalamos means fishing rod. To this day the Kalamotezi refer to the fishing rod as a kalamuća.
The exhibition was organised at the initiative of the Kumanovo chapter of the Croatian Community in Macedonia and is financed by the Croatian State Office for Croats Abroad.
