Davor Pavuna was born in Koprivnica in 1952. He graduated from the 5th Gymnasium in Zagreb in 1970 and moved on to earn his degree in experimental physics at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Science in 1977. He earned his doctorate in science at Cambridge in 1982 in the field of condensed matter physics. He worked for three years at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Grenoble. He also worked as a researcher in Australia and the USA. Since 1986 he has worked in Switzerland’s Lausanne as a university professor of physics, the chemistry of condensed matter and micro- and optoelectronics. He has published over 150 English-language research papers and textbooks on superconductivity. Pavuna has staged hundreds of lectures at the world’s leading universities. He is active at the synchrotron project in the US state of Wisconsin as part of a joint project by Swiss and American foundations for scientific research. He is the president of the world congress of nano engineering and new oxide technologies in the USA. He advises companies in several countries and was taken on as an advisor in the energy sector by US President Barack Obama. He was one of the initiators of the First Congress of Croatian Scientists staged in Vukovar in 2005. In 2006, on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nikola Tesla he received the Order of the Croatian Star with the effigy of Nikola Tesla for extraordinary services in inventions. United States Secretary of energy Steven Chu appointed Pavuna as one of the project reviewers at the U.S. Department of Energy.
