On hand for the ceremony were Vesna Haluga, the Croatian general consul in Pécs, Ivan Gugan and Angela Šokac Marković, the president and vice president respectively of the Croatian self-government authority, long time former Croatian self-government authority president Mišo Hepp, the head of the Croatian language and literature department at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs and the director of the Hungarian Croatian Institute of Sciences Stjepan Blažetin, CHF deputy director Ivan Tepeš and Lada Kanajet Šimić, the head of our education, science and sports department.
The Third Croatian School Day in Hungary was held on the 27th of May at the Miroslav Krleža Croatian School in the southern Hungarian city of Pécs. The event commemorates the first Croatian school there.
On hand for the ceremony, hosted by the Croatian self-government authority in neighbouring Hungary and supported by the Croatian Government’s State Office for Croats Abroad, were Vesna Haluga, the Croatian general consul in Pécs, Ivan Gugan and Angela Šokac Marković, the president and vice president respectively of the Croatian self-government authority, long time former Croatian self-government authority president Mišo Hepp, the head of the Croatian language and literature department at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs and the director of the Hungarian Croatian Institute of Sciences Stjepan Blažetin, Croatian Heritage Foundation deputy director Ivan Tepeš and Lada Kanajet Šimić, the head of our education, science and sports department. The ceremony was ably led by the school’s director Gabor Győrvári.
The programme opened with the unveiling of the original commemorative plaque of the first Croatian school, founded in Pécs in 1722. This was followed by a culture and arts programme featuring the pupils of the Miroslav Krleža Croatian School and two lectures on the history of Croatian schools in Hungary: Silvestar Balić spoke of Croatian Textbooks in Hungary from 1918 to 1945, while Stjepan Blažetin discussed The History of Croatian Schools. The ceremony closed with a presentation of commendations to deserving teachers.
