The August/September double issue of Matica magazine was released in mid September. The latest issue features articles on this year’s CHF summer programmes, including the University School of Croatian Language, the Summer School of Croatian Folklore, Creating Theatre, Task Force, the Little School of Croatian Language and Culture and the Croatian Ethno Treasury. Also in Matica magazine read all about a gathering of emigrants in Dubrovnik, the Emigrants’ Days event in the Kvarner Bay area, a performance in Split by musician Franco Ferrera Cvitanović and much, much more.
Interviews with emigrants and their descendants are always so much more than stories about their life and work. In this issue we speak with Marlene Prischich, the Reverend Nikola Čabraja and Matea Čubela. Our people demonstrate their deep bond with the homeland even when living in distant parts, such as with an exhibition of the history of Croatian immigration into Argentina and an exhibition of photography by a Croatian photojournalist living abroad in Koprivnica. Among the Croatian minority communities abroad the Mura River region Croatian community has opened a culture and education institute named after Stipan Blažetin in Serdahel, the Croatians of the Molise region in Italy staged an In Our Tongue event in Mundimitar and the Gradišće Croatian community stages a folklore review and fair in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava.
Some life stories have forever ended, and Matica magazine remembers Anđelko Tomasović from Australia, friar Berislav Ostojić and Irena Mažuranić from Argentina.
The leading homeland events include the three hundredth anniversary of the Alka ring-tilting contest, the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Operation Storm and the death of popular music legend Arsen Dedić. Also noteworthy are the annual meeting of the CWC central committee, the 2nd session of the Croatian Government’s advisory council on Croats abroad and the presentation of a bilingual Croatian renaissance reader, The Glory and Fame / Dike ter hvalen’ja, at the CHF edited by Vladimir Bubrin DSc and Vinko Grubišić DSc.
Fascinating content is also to be found in our columns section, with Vesna Kukavica’s Global Croatia, Šimun Šito Ćorić’s Movement/Aberration, Zvonko Ranogajec’s Our Towns & Cities, Željko Holjevac’s Dates In History, Sanja Vulić’s Let’s Talk Croatian and Jozo Župić’s The Apostolic Work of Croatian Nuns Abroad. Matica magazine, edited by Hrvoje Salopek, is also available at the Croatian Heritage Foundation portal.
