Dear readers,
The first issue of this year is out, and with the meaningful cover of King Tomislav, we officially mark the 1100th anniversary of the Kingdom of Croatia in 2025, which will be celebrated with a series of events in his honour in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The historian Marijan Lipovac has written a major text on King Tomislav, in which he provides a number of lesser-known but extremely interesting details from his life. In this rich double issue, we have devoted a lot of attention to the Croatian language abroad, so we have a story about the graduating students in Geelong and the celebration of the Croatian language in Australia under the auspices of the Central Committee of Croatian National Schools (SOHEŠ) and the teachers at the Secondary Language School, then the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Centre for Croatian Instruction in Stuttgar. There is also a story about Croatian instruction in Montenegro sent to us by Nikola Dončić, the editor-in-chief of Hrvatski List. We have also covered two Croatian dances, one in Vienna, the other in Kópháza, and you should definitely read the interview with Ivan Gugan, President of the Government Council for Croats Abroad, and the excellent report from Canada, where the folklore seminar took place. In the new issue of Matica magazine, read the interview with Jasna Čapo, PhD, who recently became the first ethnologist to become a full member of the Social Sciences Class of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and who in an interview with Matica reflected on the historical currents of Croatian emigration and the position of women in academia, as well as on how generations of Croatians have managed to preserve their identity in emigration.
Until next month, greetings from all the members of the Matice magazine editorial team!
